Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are devices that look like shoe insoles and are designed to correct improper foot biomechanics. They work by realigning your feet into their best position so that the muscles of your feet are able to function properly and more efficiently. They help relieve pain and discomfort by taking the pressure off painful areas that have been aggravated by improper foot biomechanics. They also help relieve pain and restore proper function in additional areas such as knees, hips, back and even your neck.

Just as an uneven foundation can negatively affect the structure of a building, so can improperly aligned feet negatively affect the structure and function of your body.  Even a “small” problem in the structure and motion of your feet and ankles can have an adverse impact on the rest of your body that is supported by your feet.  Besides providing pain relief, custom orthotics help to restore balance and alignment to your body, provide shock absorption that can help prevent stress injuries, and improve your overall comfort and stability.

If you are interested in custom orthotics, a biomechanical evaluation will be performed which includes an assessment of your foot/ankle/knee shape and function, as well as a gait analysis.  The joints of your feet will be adjusted to obtain the optimal position for making the foot impression.  Your feet are then positioned into neutral and pushed into a foam cast that takes a three dimensional impression of your feet.  This cast is sent to a lab where the orthotics are custom made from the mold of your cast.

Some extended health care insurance plans will fully or partially cover the cost of the custom orthotics.  Some individual plans may require a prescription from a medical doctor in order to qualify for reimbursement. Contact your insurance provider for the specific requirements of your plan.
